24th Regiment of Foot in North America

The Kings Shilling...Serve with Distinction

The Regimental Colour really is the embodiment of a Regiment so they are not only a locating symbol, but also record the proud and costly history of each Regiment.  As such they are guarded and escorted with unbelievable Zest and honor.

One of our greatest honors was receiving our King's Colours from Major General Elliot of the Royal Regiment of Wales during the 225th Anniversary of the Battles of Saratoga event.

Young active men from seventeen to twenty-five of age, make the most tractable soldiers; nor should they be desired taller than six feet nor lower than five feet, six inches and a half, when circumstances will admit so great a nicety.  In time of war, the difficulty of raising a sufficient number of men makes it necessary to dispense with niceties.

Who are the 24th They are a group of people with the common interest in history, especially the American Revolution, and reenacting was the next natural course of continuing this interest.

When these lads advance in years, as in is probable that in them, a regiment is rearing so many fine recruits.

Being a member of the 24th is a family affair, as you see the young lads to the right have grown into or soon will be in the ranks as soldiers.

In the field, five men being the usual proportion for each tent, as many as possible should be always kept.  Complete with that number, both on account of messing and for greater ease to the men, in carrying the tent-poles and camp-equipage on the march. After having spent his pay in spirituous liquors…and having no means left of subsisting, but by selling his linen.

We have the opportunity to sit back and enjoy our surroundings and lift a pint or two after a hard day of drilling and battling.

The 24th form’d briskly, ascended the hill within thirty yards of the Rebels and immediately began a brisk fire, which lasted one hour and a half…

Why join the British Army?   There are many reasons why people join the British, from their family nationality, interest in more military structure to the simple reason that they like the uniforms.

I attacked a corps of Rebels of at least 2000; The British detachment consisted only of 850 fighting men…

Not only do we demonstrate actual historical battles but we get a chance to match are wits and skills with the enemy in open tactical.

Then it was pell-mell Fight, units mixed together, men and units separated, utter ruin waiting.  Burgoyne was putting every available man into his defenses, but did not have enough for counterattack It was the light infantry and the 24th that saved something besides honor from the rout.

Why the 24th?   The variety of reasons have been that were the closest reenactment unit, they are a family oriented regiment and the original 24th actually did campaigned in their area and is one of Britain’s most famous regiment.  The most common reason is that they are dedicated to authenticity.

Here I cannot help observing… wether it proceded from an idea of self-preservation, or natural instinct, but the soldiers greatly improved the mode they were taught in, as to expedition for as soon as they had primed their pieces and put the cartridges in the barrel instead of ramming it down with the rods.  They struck the butt end of their piece upon the ground, and bringing it to the present, fired it off.

…Lt. Anbury - 24th Foot

What are the requirements and cost?  As in all hobbies there are requirements and the 24th is no different.  Enlisted men must be at least 16 years of age and be physically fit to perform all his required duties.   You are obligated to attend three mandatory meetings and events.  The cost of obtaining your required uniform is not inexpensive but should last a life time.  At this time we have no annual dues but you are expected to contributing to common necessities of the regiment, i.e. tents, camp equipment and food, etc.

The 24th Battalion received orders to file off by the left They took the wood, before them firing after them (in the Americans) own manner from behind trees And twice repuls’d their repeated reinforcements without any.
